Hailey
Hailey is on of our F1 Bernedoodle mammas. We picked Hailey for our program for her heath, temperament, confirmation, and overall presence. When we are looking for a puppy for our program, it takes about 12-18 months to make that final decision. We look for health, temperament, confirmation, and overall presence.
Health: When we look at health, we look at parents health testing. We like to see testing 3-5 generations back. This will help ensure that we are doing everything we can to produce healthy puppies. Next, the dog in our program must pass health testing themselves. They must receive a passing prelim score on hips fair or better, elbows must be normal, heart and eyes must be checked by our vet. We must have proof of parents DNA testing or/and have DNA testing on the individual dog.
Temperament: When it comes to temperament, this is just as important as health for our program. We have high expectations when it comes to temperament. We are working on a video that goes into detail on our process for picking a puppy based on temperament. It is a minimum 12 month process that starts when puppies are just born. A few things we look for are energy level, willingness to please, prey drive, overall ease, adaptability, natural tendencies, and social traits.
Confirmation: When we are looking for a dog in our breeding program, we are looking at the individual dogs confirmation. We are looking for sturdy, well balanced. Powerful but elegant. For the head we want to see strong, flat skull, moderately broad. Straight muzzle, well defined stop. Almond shaped eyes in brown, blue, or green.
We want to see a strong, muscular neck blending into the shoulders with a straight back. Deep chest reaching near the elbows with a tail that is bushy and carried low when relaxed.
We want to see forelegs straight and parallel, hind legs strong, well-muscled, moderate angulation, feet compact rounded with firm pads.
We want confirmation close to the Bernese.
Overall presence: When it comes to overall presence, we are looking for a combination of everything we talked about above. We want everything to come together and flow nicely. While we do breed for color, that is not at the top of our priority list. We want a beautiful, healthy, well rounded dog.
Our final test for our program is to produce a litter. This will give us an idea on what is being passed down. We train 4 puppies from the first litter so we can have an idea on what we are producing. While training, we go through the same process we would with a breeding dog. Looking for specific traits. If we like the litter, they will officially join our program.
We are beyond thrilled to have Hailey in our program. She has the perfect sweet temperament that we are looking for. Our final test will be training her first litter. We can not wait to watch them learn and grow! We have high hopes for them.
