Bernedoodles are a mix between a poodle and Bernese mountain dog. While poodles are far less likely to shed due to their curly hair type, Bernese mountain dogs have straighter hair which is easier to shed. Most Bernedoodles, however, have the wavy coat that is low to no shed hair type. This helps their coat to be hypoallergenic for which most people with allergies are okay with. Bernedoodles with a more curly coat is more like the poodle and will not shed.  It is very rare to have a bernedoodle with straight hair. The straighter the coat the more it will shed.

Bernese Mountain Dog Lifespan

The Bernese Mountain Dog originated in the Swiss mountains. Paintings from the 18th century show what appear to be Bernese Mountain Dogs. These dogs were excellent at draft work and pulling carts and wagons. When other dog breeds began to be imported into Switzerland, Professor Albert Heim and Franz Schertenleib focused on preserving the breed into what we now know as the Bernese Mountain Dog.

Bernese Mountain Dog Personality

Today, the Bernese Mountain Dog makes for a wonderful companion and friend. These dogs are excellent at tracking, watching, herding, and even search and rescue.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are very intelligent and very friendly around children. Since they’re easy to train, they make for the perfect watchdog. Alert, good-natured, and confident, these dogs easily socialize with others.

As these dogs are sensitive, training them gently but firmly will help them attach to you. Helping them to clearly know the rules will help them remain secure and satisfied.

They have a moderately long coat that can be thick, wavy, or straight. They’re fur is typically tri-color, meaning they have three distinguishable colors, primarily black, rust, and white. Their fur is also symmetric with fur patterns and colors being the same on both sides.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is an incredibly strong and agile canine. With a body slightly longer than its height, the Bernese Mountain Dog is large in size with strong straight legs. They also have triangular ears, bushy tails, and round paws with arched toes.
